In understanding the prophetic ministry, one has to be very careful not to call good bad and bad good. There is a very big difference between merchandising the gospel and honouring God by reason of principle. God set up the prophetic ministry from time past that those who sought to seek God's mind also understood to carry gifts to those men who heard the voice of God. It's not because God has a need for money but because something happens to a man when they give of their substance.
The verse shows us that when Saul first encountered Samuel, the first thing he thought in preparing to see the man of God was what gift to carry. Child of God, going before God with gifts does not mean you are buying God, neither does it imply the minister is selling the voice of God. It only means you honour the presence of God.
When the wise men from the east saw the star of Jesus, the first thing they carried were gifts because Jesus was not just a king but a prophet. One may say, but Elisha rejected the gifts of Naaman. You must understand the gifts of Naaman were not rejected because of him but because Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, was under training, and God wanted to test him through this. Not everything done in scripture directly anulls a principle. Only on two occasions in scripture have ministers refused gifts, yet we see more examples of people carrying gifts before ministers.
Therefore, it holds that no man can merchandise the gospel through giving, but rather, men are changed when they learn to honour God and his servants by their giving. The devil today is trying to destroy the place of honouring God with gifts because someone somewhere feels people are being robbed. God and gifts can never be separated because gifts are a representation of a man's gratitude.
